Axions are hypothetical particles which were introduced to address a deep problem in fundamental physics: Why are the laws so nearly time-reversal symmetric? Axions have remarkable properties, and they have become a leading candidate to provide the astronomical "dark matter”. In recent years many physicists around the world have taken up the challenge of designing and performing experiments to observe axions. After briefly reviewing all that, I will discuss a promising new proposal.
